NEW PARCELS ON HUNTERS POINT (06/29/08)
The United States Navy bears the grave responsibility of cleaning up the whole Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. So, far the U.N. Navy have in a botched process conveyed Parcel A to the City and County of San Francisco - who is turn handed Parcel A to the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA).
The SFRA made the worst mistake and handed Parcel A to a Rogue Company, Lennar Corporation. Lennar Corporation poisoned our children and elders. Lennar graded large areas of land, crushed Serpentine Rock, released thousands of structures of Asbestos and all that without any dust and Asbestos monitoring equipment in place for over four months. Released heavy metals and radiological elements and clear cut over four hundred mature trees. Earlier the Restoration Advisory Board - the citizens chosen to represent the community did not agree and did not sign on conveying or handing over Parcel A to the City and County of San Francisco. They were convinced that Parcel A was dirty and they were right. This time around the authorities that be - dubious in nature are trying to stack the Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) with chosen candidates that will jump when they are told to jump. A good sign was that the recent elections favored a candidate who will do right by the community - Leon Muhammad. He was elected as the Co-Chair of the RAB, June 26, 2008. People can be bought and have been bought before. As time goes by many will forget how Lennar came to be and what is more how they are failing each and every day. All over the Nation Lennar is declaring bankruptcy and in doing so taking ten to fifteen Limited Liability Corporations (LLCs) down with them. Lennar has practically defaulted on Parcel A. And there is more to come. Which bring us to the United States Navy and its mandated obligation to clean up the whole Shipyard and more so Parcel E2 and Parcel E for sure? The U.S. Navy is being pressured to cap large areas. This pressure has been brought upon the U.S. by mostly corrupt politicians the likes of Senator Diane Feinstein. Standing on the side lines the man without a backbone - Mayor Gavin Newsom who will do anything to favor Rogue Companies like Lennar and has failed to represent the community of the Bayview Hunters Point and San Francisco. There are plans to build a stadium on the Shipyard that is a Superfund Site. Hence a Parcel named G. What could G stand for - gangs, goons, gentrification and why would anyone build a stadium in the middle of Chernobyl. Another Parcel D2 and may be this Parcel is named after the Devil. We know of toxic hotspots in this area. In the year 2000 over eighty seven percent of the constituents of San Francisco voted for Proposition P and rightly so. Proposition stated that the entire Shipyard be cleaned to Residential Standards. The City and County of San Francisco also has a Precautionary Principle that has been sidelined and this is wrong. We must not harm any living being and that includes human beings. The U.S. Navy really has no money with billons flowing to Iraq. Our City and County of San Francisco has no money for any clean up. We cannot trust any company like Lennar - that came in, bought folks, and thought they could commit evil actions and not be accounted for. Not so in San Francisco. The New Parcels named are causing confusion and the old ones are there waiting for serious clean up. The bottom line is not listening to politicians but cleaning up the land. Cleaning up the Watershed that is polluted and addressing the deep concerns of the First People - who exercised their Right of First Refusal - they are the Muwekma Ohlone. As a Representative of the Muwekma Ohlone I have requested the entire Hunters Point Naval Shipyard be Archeologically Surveyed. The U.S. Navy has yet to respond to my request. Time will tell. The Muwekma Ohlone exercised their Right of First Refusal in 1991. One can divide the Shipyard and create as many parcels - the bottom line is to leave the land that once was stolen as Pristine as possible. Failing that the consequences will be severe and you that purport to know what you are doing are warned. A holistic approach is a clarion call to bring about justice to all living beings in and around the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. The Regulatory Agencies - the SF Health Department, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the Environmental Protect Agency, the Department of Toxic and Substances Control, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, the Center for Diseases Control - there are other local, State, and Federal agencies that have not done right by people that are poor and need our help - now. |
