THE BUFFALO SOLDIERS COMMITTEE

The Buffalo Soldiers Committee was formed to preserve, protect, and interpret the buildings and history associated with the Buffalo Soldiers.

At the Presidio the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry Regiments were stationed. This in very unique. The Presidio, is also the home of over 455 Buffalo Soldiers who are buried in the Presidio Veterans Cemetery.

At the Presidio you have Pershing Hall and Pershing Square named after General Pershing. When General Pershing was alive every one called him "Black Jack". He commanded the Black Buffalo Soldiers and was very proud of his black soldiers.

After all these years not a building nor a street is named after the Buffalo Soldiers. These soldiers were instrumental in patrolling the Parks before the National Park Service (NPS) was formed in 1916. In fact the Standard Operating Procedures written by the Buffalo Soldiers was followed by the NPS.

The Buffalo Soldiers built roads and trails. The specialized in logistics and were fierce horsemen and fighters. The bore the proud name of Buffalo Soldiers because the Native American gave it to them. The Buffalo was sacred to the Native American and they chose to honor the Black soldiers by naming them Buffalo Soldiers.

It is a shame that in 1999 a special committee has been formed to right the wrong. Entities, who should do their job are not doing it.

The history of the Buffalo Soldier is rich and we are on the verge of making history. We intend to establish a unique Buffalo Soldier Museum right here on the Presidio of San Francisco.

We have submitted our proposal to the Trust after meeting with Craig Middleton and Joe Perrelli several times. Prominent and key Congresspersons and Senators of the Bay Area have endorsed us.

We hope that soon we will have our own Buffalo Soldier Museum and right the wrong meted out to these well deserving Black Soldiers of years gone by.
