MUWEKMA OHLONE PARK AND SANCTUARY
300 years ago all that we see in San Francisco and beyond - belonged rightfully to the Muwekma Ohlone. Who? The Muwekma Ohlone the First People of San Francisco and the Bayarea.
The City and County of San Francisco have honored the Muwekma Ohlone with 3 Resolutions. Each of the Resolutions acknowledge the Muwekma Ohlone as the First People of San Francisco. The City and County of San Francisco stops short of naming a single street, erecting some building, naming and leaving a name on something - in honor of the Muwekma Ohlone. In the year 2004 it is unimaginable to fathom how this progressive City and County of San Francisco has NOT done anything much to honor the Muwekma Ohlone besides paying lip service. More so when all the land was stolen from the Muwekma Ohlone. All of it. The history of the Muwekma Ohlone is rich and has been told and written in many books and documents. A few months ago experts at University of California Bekerley - are reviving the language now lost but once spoken by the Muwekma Ohlone. Mission Dolores mentions about the Ohlone. So does when anyone reads about the Presidio of San Francisco. All the hills in San Franciso and over 40 sites have archeological remains - linked to the Ohlone. The larger hills have Shellmounds which are Sacred Burial Sites. The facts are there but what is it that makes the White Men fail to respect the First People? In the year 2000 David Erickson went out of his way to clean and fence San Francisco Port Authority property on 1800 Illinois Street. Some land closer to Pier 80 and facing Islais Creek. The area was used by drug addict, prostitutes, and some parts as a free for all - dumpsite. The San Francisco Port Authority did not care about this piece of land for years. All Port Land belongs to the People under the Public Trust Land. All Public Trust Land should be cared and used for Recreational and Maritime purposes. David Ericson cleaned the area and with friends who live near by - Kal, Nick, Mindy, Mike, Jory, Rafael, Rudy, and a host of others too many to mention declared that the Park be named the Muwekma Ohlone Park and Sanctuary. To some of us this guerrilla Park and Sanctuary meant a lot. More so to the thousands of children that visited it. In the year 2000 the SF Port Authority was a bit concerned but I went before the SF Port Commission and requested that the Commissioners to acknowledge the good work of the people and David Erickson in particular and approve the name given - Muwekma Ohlone Park and Sanctuary. The August 2000 minutes reflect this fact. This I stated was a good mitigation gesture for the constituents of San Francisco and California. A year later the San Francisco Port Authority revealed to us in a dubious manner that they planned to build a bridge very near the Muwekma Ohlone Park and Sanctuary. A short time after this we all got the worst shock of our lives. MUNI and San Francisco Public Utilities Commission contracted Proven a company that does a lot of business with the City and County of San Francisco to dig, drill, and construct 3 large conduits under the Force Main which ran stark middle of the Muwekma Ohlone Park and Sanctuary. We did not know about this Force Main exact location. 2 days before Thanksgiving in the year 2001 - the conduit compromised the Force Main and a large cesspool was created in the middle of the Muwekma Park and Sanctuary. The thousands of children who visited the Park, the thousands of hours of labor and love, the one of kind native plants, insects, birds, animals - were all compromised. The shock of this incident has been reported in the many leading newspapers and on the Internet. MUNI, SFPUC, DPW, and SF Port Authority remain defiant and will not remedy the blunders they made. MUNI and SF Public Utilities Commission did not take care and compromised the whole City and County of San Francisco. This Force Main takes 80% of the City sewage and a 100% from Colma, Daly City, Brisbane, and Burlingame. Over 180 million gallons of secondary effluents flow through this Force Main. Home Land Security should be aware of this Emergency Situation. Sophie Maxwell the dumb, inept, ignorant, and very arrogant District 10 Supervisor was fully cognizant of this fact and did nothing in her power to help the constituents. She was informed but did not want to help the constituents knowing well that she was part of this fiasco. On the day the incident happened no one was available from the San Francisco Port Authority. MUNI did not want to assume responsibility and they were the main culprits. SF Public Utilities Commission tried to blame the Department of Public Works. Bottom line the buffoons were exposed and to this day no one want to assume full responsibility. Michael Burns, Dennis Tsai, Vince Harris, Ben Leung, Pat Martell, Sophie Maxwell, the Board of Supervisors, Mayor Willie L. Brown, the Cattelus Corporation that have jumped ship, the SF Port Authority and past director of SF Port Authority Douglas Wong, Dianne Oshima, David Beupre - all know about this fiasco but tried to hoodwink the constituents of San Francisco - for the longest time ever. Today, January 14, 2005 the whole area is a mess. After all these years and after fully realizing that all the 3 conduits are compromised - MUNI is trying to reinforce the Force Main. This will never happen. MUNI and the dumb fools can try all they want but they will fail. The Force Main will collapse and I will reveal it to you all - now. Never. No one in their right mind would dig 3 large tunnels under the Force Main - a pipe that is 8 feet wide. No one would ever think of bringing a transmission line under such a sensitive area and under the Islais Creek without a through Soil Assessment. No one in their right mind would waste over 30 million of taxpayers money. Time the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Budget Analyst investigate this matter. Please call: 415-554-2489. Sophie Maxwell will not say a word and tries to blame others. Michael Burns will not say a word and shoves the blame on others. Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) did not want to have anything to do with this project - and took SFPUC and MUNI to court and won. The proposed Transmission Line to power MUNI 3rd Street Lightrail was compromised. The SF County Transportation Authority funded this project and lost a lot of money - $ 10 million or so - they will not reveal the exact amount. The City and County of San Francisco are known for such debacles. But this one will go down in history. But wait - the Muwekma Park and Sanctuary has been compromised. The whole area is devoid of any trees and vegetation - the Chorus Frog, the birds, the insects, the one of kind native trees - all gone. I have posted a picture. The picture was a dream - build this nice Park and Sanctuary and place a healing pole. Thousands of children and others would come, visit, and be inspired. MUNI, SFPUC, DPW, SF Port Authority - all took us for a ride and destroyed the only site named after the First People of San Francisco the Muwekma Ohlone. The only vegetation left is the wild Pickleweed. The fresh shoot tastes good though somewhat salty. The salty waters of Islais Creek wash along the small beach that was part of the Park and now comes right into the area in defiance. Today is a windy day and the waters are rushing in and defying the construction workers. It is as if the Spirits want the construction workers to go away. David Erickson keeps calling me and asking for advice and help. Believe me I have done all in my power to save this Muwekma Park and Sanctuary - but alas the trees, the birds, the insects, the Chorus Frog, the vegetation - the glory that once was is no more. It is my hope that the fools who destroyed everything will have some sense and compassion and restore - what can be restored. I really have no time banging my head and trying to convince stupid fools what is right and what is wrong. Anyone with common sense would not dig 3 huge tunnels under a huge 8-foot pipe on land that is landfill. The San Francisco Port Authority now wants to build a bridge over and next to the Force Main. This is the height of STUPIDITY - now go figure. Over this bridge all the traffic that now plies on 3rd Street will be diverted - millions of vehicles, tons of pollution - lead, mercury, PM-10s, toxins of the worst type will surround the area. This is San Francisco the City that knows how! |
