The Historical Radiological Assessment (HRA) gives one some idea about the mess that the U.S. Navy has created but it is just the tip of the iceberg. No one knows for sure what it takes to really clean up Pacel E2 the worse of the worst sites on Hunters Point Naval Shipyard an area that is more then 13 acres. I have seen experts remain silent and stay silent for a long time. They were asked a simple question how best to clean Parcel E2? But, the U.S. Navy remains nonchalant throwing arrows in the air and thinking most lay folks are ignorant and do not really comprehend the adverse impacts of such hot spots that contain the worst radiological brew - deep in the ground. It does not matter what it costs - it matters that the U.S. Navy leave the land that it abused- clean or cleaner then it abused with any consideration for life organisms - human and other. The United States Navy bears full responsibility for the adverse health impact in and around Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. This is all the more significant when it turned properties like Mariners Housing Area - without proper clean up. The adverse impact of the underground fire in the year 2000 that went on for weeks without the United States Navy taking any immediate action - cries for justice and its adverse impacts have affected a large area and thousands of innocent constituents living in and around Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. The United States Navy in recent months has been trying to fast track the clean up of Parcel B - a site plagued with one large area containing Mercury and another large area - containing active Methane Gas. Cesium-137, Strontium-90, Radium-226, Plutonium-239, Cobalt-60 is serious enough to demand a total clean up. Add to that Antimony, Cadium, Lead, Manganese, Mercury, Arsenic, Benzene, Thallium, Pentachlorophenol, and a host of other very toxic chemicals that have contaminated the Ground Water all over Hunters Point Naval Shipyard - and this calls for more then a total clean up. The United States Navy must be put on notice for its activities have taken a heavy toll on our children and elders. Affected thousands of human lives and in the bargain polluted large area. Animals, bird, fish, and life in general have been affected and this has been stated to the United States Navy in no uncertain terms. Home of the National Radiological Defense Laboratory (NRDL), the home where Depleted Uranium was first tested - Hunters Point Naval Shipyard is a Superfund Site - one of the ten worst in the United States. We demand that all of Hunters Point Naval Shipyard be cleaned to Residential Standards. The First People, the Muwekma Ohlone demand the Watershed is cleaned to Residential Standards. The First People, the Muwekma Ohlone are totally opposed to capping the land that is Hunters Point Naval Shipyard - once stolen from the First People. Later taken by Eminent Domain for War Purposes - and the land, air, and water abused and polluted. We must leave a legacy that is holistic but one that exercises a moral compass that takes us to a better place. |
